Jim Matthews and
Woody Mosgers began drinking and eating together over six
years ago when Jim needed help preparing food for a Thanksgiving
season wine class he was teaching. We should take a moment
here to point out that the Thanksgiving meal is the most challenging
of any for wine and food matching and is thus the basis for
WGWW? as in
"What goes with Thanksgiving dinner?"
In fact it is always the theme of the fourth night of each
WGWW? session - and the rest is well
wine and food
The WGWW? series
offers what we believe to be a unique take on wine and food
matching. At each one of the four weekly sessions you'll have
the opportunity to taste five different wines - and not just
with some bread and a piece of cheese. Along with the wines
you'll pair sample portions of the same types of food you
eat everyday at home or in restaurants -- OK some of the food
is better than you get at home. We do a pasta night, seafood,
grilled and sauced meats and of course, if you're paying attention,
Thanksgiving Dinner. And yes there are also two cheeses that
demonstrate their ability to match with the wines of the evening.
The "WGWW?"
sessions are casual and hopefully informative and believe
us we don't claim to be experts, just a couple fellows who
like to eat and drink. Jim is the more studious of the two
and knows the names of all the little towns in Italy and which
way the wind blows off the ocean to cool the grapes so - he
hosts the informational wine knowledge portion of the evenings.
It's during this
part of the sessions that Woody is clanking around in the
kitchen boiling pasta, finishing a sauce or poaching a salmon.
After you have gathered some wine making and tasting info
you will have the chance to actually taste through all five
wines, you'll probably like the whites most, everybody does.
Then you'll got to try each of the wines with the first food
item, make and hear some comments from your peers and maybe
even a clever aside or two, usually from Woody. This process
repeats itself with the other food items and Jim hosts the
general discussion and public ratings of the wines and food
matches or mismatches - these things happen you know. By the
end of the evening you'll have had some wine and some food
and then you'll like the reds, everybody does - but that's
the magic of the whole thing.
